Analysing Music Videos

Rap:
Eminem: I’m not afraid

Camera:Close up- one of the main camera shots seen throughout the video- introduces the artist and builds a relationship with the audience. This builds the artists popularity as consumers like to know about their favourite artists in order to buy into their lifestyles.

Editing:Jump cuts- between Eminem singing, and acting as superman- the jump shots not only represent the narrative and performance basements of the video, but also give the lyrics a deeper understanding for the audience. the words "im not afraid" match well to superman as he is seen as invincible.

Sound: there are no voice overs, extra sounds in this video, however the lyrics and beat of the song create a very intense atmosphere for the listener. Eminem's lyrics relate to real life and his own experiences which enables the consumer to relate to his songs and him as an artist. This again furthers his popularity as the consumer is being deeper informed of his lifestyle and background.

Mise en Scene: High key lighting is used mainly in the video- high key lighting usually creates a happy, calm and loving effect to a music video, however due to the intenseness of the lyrics and beat, it is a contradiction to the song. This can be related to Goodwin's theory, 'links music and visuals' even if it is in a contradicting way.

R&B:
Usher: Nice and Slow

Camera:Establishing shot-sets a sexy and romantic atmosphere for the song- the use of an establishing shot is to make the audience engage with the artist, song and music video, ecpanding publicity and popularity.

Editing:Cross fading- throughout the beginning- allows the audience to engage with the narrative as well as the artist as it represents his personality and sexuality.

Sound:Lyrics and diegetic sounds-the lyrics represent Usher as a romantic and sensitive person who knows how to love his girlfriend and make her feel special-this expands Usher popularity, especially with women, as it is a desire to have someone like Usher in their life.

Mise en Scene:Location-set in a mansion, assumably Ushers- this reflects his lifestyle and allows the consumer to buy into this, getting to know the desired artist better.

Pop:
Jls: Eyes wide shut

Camera:Long shots-show the artist's full body and style, allowing the consumer to engage deeper with the group as they now know their music styles, clothing styles and reflected personalities.

Editing:Visual effects:eg, pink sun/lighting, 'heads in the clouds'-this is a metaphor meaning extremely happy-suggesting they are very happy with the girl they are with.

Sound: an upbeat feel good techno like beat, makes the consumer want to dance and sing along, this increases the artist's popularity as they are engaging with their audeince.

Mise en Scene:props-the big speakers in the wall reflect the techno side of the song as it makes the song basey and up beat for the audience. it also follows Goodwin's theory as the music is matching the visuals.

Dance:
Tinie Tempah ft Sweedish House Mafia: Miami to Ibiza

Camera:Point of view shots-throughout the video-allows the audience to see whats happening throught the artists perspective. This enables the audience to engage and form a relationship with the artist as it is although they are sharing his lifestyle.

Editing:the flashing black and white clips throughout the video are flashbacks and memories of the artists 'holiday' and the things he got up to. this reflects the artists personality as fun, laid back and a bit of a party guy.

Sound:starts with non diegetic sound of someone walking away from a plane. this sets the scene as the artist has reached miami or ibiza to start the song, again following Goodwin's theory for Lyrics and visuals matching.

Mise en Scene:Location is on holiday somewhere hot-this is contrapuntal to the beat and lyrics of the song as holidays are assosiated with upbeat vibes and fun.
