Album Artwork
How can artwork support an artist’s image?
• Album artwork shows an artist’s background, reflects their star personality and the image they have created through their music.
• It also reflects the genre of the artist’s music
• Album work helps sell an artist as a product, making the audience buy into their image and aspire to be like them.
How has the demand for artwork changed with the introduction of new media technology and what effect has this had on the need for artwork?
• Artwork has gone from a hard copy picture to a digital file format available on download.
• This is because society has become more digital with the new technology being produced all the time.
• Album artwork is no longer only found in a CD case. It has gone to a further extent and is now available online for example fan pages, facebook and itunes.
• Album artwork can also be seen on music channels and adverts when promoting a new album.
• They can also be used as bedroom posters.
From the album artworks you were shown, what connotations were established and how does this affect your understanding of the music or artist?
• East 17- uses dark colours such as blue, black, red and brown. These colours make the image mysterious and grimey. It is set in an alley way, the artists have a relaxed, trouble making look, body language and one is holding a dog on a lead. Low key lighting is used to cast shadows across the artists faces, adding to the mysteriousness of them – the music could be of a grime genre and they seem to be a ‘Jack-the-lad’ type group. They are very laid back and ‘cool’. The positioning of the camera being at a low angle show the boys and superior to the audience and this can come across as quite intimidating.
• Catherine Jenkins- uses a lot of red to connote romance suggesting that the artist album consists of love songs or power ballads. The streak of darkness behind her makes her stand out in the red dress and as it is a long shot, shows off her figure, possibly appealing to men but women equally as they can aspire to look like her. The setting is very theatrical as she is peeping through red curtains which are traditionally associated with theatre- this portrays the artist’s album as being relaxing and chilling and possible full of love songs and power ballads. A good place to hear this music would be in the background of a dinner date/party or on low when working.
