Album Covers
Choose two artists within the genre of your own music video and analyse three of their album covers.

Genre: Reggae
Artists: Bob Marley; Gregory Isaacs

Bob Marley
This album cover is from the album legend.
It uses dark colours such as black, blue and brown with gold colour writing
for the title and artist name. The dark colours connote mystery and this can
also be conveyed through the relaxed pose of Bob Marley in the photo. This follows point one of Goodwin’s theory; “Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics” Reggae is known to be a chilling and relaxing style of music is generally about being relaxed or love. The body language of the artist is the only of suggesting that the target audience for this music is people that are bubbly, chilled out and quite easy going. There is no location or props to suggest it is aimed at a specific age or gender.

This cover again has no location or props, but it does however use
More colours and has a distorted type image of the artist, this time
Posing as though he is looking at something natural and simplistic.
Generally, the colour green connotes jealousy, yellow happiness and red anger. However this is a contradiction to Bob Marley’s style of music. He sings about love peace and harmony and the colours are used to represent his home country. As they are bright colours too, they bring a bubbly and exciting mood to the cover.

This final Bob Marley cover uses again no props, no location, and the Colours green yellow and red. This repeats throughout his album covers, as
Does his aspiring lyrics of peace love and harmony, with a laid back, easy
Going vibe. The words “One Love” expresses this passion he has for music
And the world he lives in and attracts and audience who share his views.

Gregory Isaacs

Like Bob Marley’s, this album cover uses dark colours and a simple picture
Of the artist looking relaxed and at peace. All of the reggae album covers I Have researched follow a similar style; the artist as the main
Focus, few colours if any and also few words.

This cover has one difference to the rest and it is the use of the
Spliff he is smoking. He looks chilled and marijuana is well known
For its calming effects. This again ties in with the music having a
Relaxing and chilled vibe and compliments this style well.
