The Purpose Of a Music Video

The Purpose of a music video is to:

  • Use as a market tool to promote an artist/song

  • Show a short narrative or representation of the artist

  • Attract a particular target audience

  • Identify an artist/group

  • Buy into the artists lifestyle

  • Show the different generic conventions of a genre/music video

  • Ensure the audience remember the song

  • Make a song available to a wide audience

  • Show more about the audience

  • Build a relationship with the artist

  • Make the audience understand more about a song.

Different styles of music videos

Music videos are split into 3 different categories;

  • Performance-singing/dancing

  • Narrative-telling the audience a story

  • Concept-selling the audience and idea/theme/ideology

Some music videos contain a mixture of the different styles and some conatin only one.

I have analysed and given an example of how the three categories are show in Christina Aguilera's video, 'Beautiful'.

The video contains all 3 elements:

Performance-The artist is singing

Narrative-The different images of people are showing how they are being bullied because of the way they look

Concept-The ideology and message of the video is that everyone is beautiful and should be treated equally

Generic Conventions of a Music Video

Conventions of a music video vary depending on the genre, mood of the video and whether the artist is part of a group or a solo act.

The genereic conventions of an r'n'b video by a solo artist would be:

  • having the cameras main focus on the artist, so the audience are aware of who is singing the song.

  • it may include back up dancers who would be shown in the back ground but do not get much attention.

  • the audience could expect to see a mixed gender of both men and women mingling.

  • some R'n'B videos are filmed with a 'partying' atmoshphere background.

The generic conventions of a music video for a girl band however would be slightly different:

  • the concentration would be spread around each member.

  • groups with a 'main singer' have slightly more shots on that person but the audience will also see group shots. This is usually seen when a dance routine has been made for the group to follow together.

  • male back up dancers are usually seen in girl band videos as the songs are usually about relationships or men.

  • the girls are always in sexy outfits, aiming largely at the male audience.

The generic conventions of a rock music video contrasts completely with RnB and Pop videos. it generally uses dark colours and atmospheres, eg, low key lighting and costumes. generic conventions of a rock video consist of:

  • equipment
